Minority Report turned out to be predictive of modern computer science, foretelling technologies that have since become commonplace, including personalized ads, voice automation and gesture controlled computers. Even predictive policing, arguably Minority Report’s biggest theme, has become a reality nowadays. PredPol, an AI-based tool, has been deployed in approximately 40 agencies across the United States since 2012 to predict and prevent future crime.

Dick, "Minority Report" is an action-detective thriller set in Washington D.C. in 2054, where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crime. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) were undeniably one of the most discussed topics in the blockchain industry. So, what exactly are these NFTs? Why are they so important? 

And how do you get them if you’re interested in them? This easy to understand guide will answer all those questions – and if you’re a total beginner in the realm of digital tokens and would like to get up to speed, then we urge you to stick to the end. 

With that in mind, let’s start with the basics!

## What are Non-Fungible Tokens?

Think of non-fungible tokens as digital collectibles, like trading cards. NFTs are similar to cryptocurrencies in the sense that they trade on a blockchain and have a monetary value attached to them. The only difference between non-fungible tokens and cryptocurrencies is that NFTs have certain characteristics that make them different from their fellow NFTs (even when two NFTs look totally similar.) Confused? Let’s jump into an example:

If you trade one Ethereum for another Ethereum, then you will have traded one identical thing for another. None of the parties involved in the transaction will lose anything, because they’ll both end up with one Ethereum.

If you trade one NFT for another NFT, however, the two can be significantly different regardless of whether they look similar or not. This is because non-fungible tokens include deeper layers of characteristics that make them different from one another. 

These characteristics might include serial numbers, visuals, metadata, etc. How these affect the NFT’s value will depend on the characteristics that buyers value most.

As you may have noticed after the explanation above, non-fungible tokens present exhilarating monetization opportunities for collectors and brands alike, mainly because they are safe to trade, provably authentic, and can include all distinct sorts of branding and artwork opportunities.

Non-fungible tokens are also at times referred to as Crypto Collectibles or Niftys. Even most importantly, these Non-fungible tokens trade on a wide array of different blockchains, and we’ll touch on those a few topics later in this guide.

 

## Non-fungible token standards

For now, let’s look at the three main non-fungible token standards:

### ERC 721

ERC 721 is the less-famous cousin of the ERC 20, but a no less essential part of the Ethereum network. ERC 721 is first and foremost, a type of standard – and a standard in the realm of non-fungible tokens is simply a format or template that other developers agree to use and follow. 

Developers choose to follow these same standards because it makes writing code more predictable, easier, and reusable. Note though: even though following a widely adopted standard means compatibility with a wide array of applications including wallets, Dapps, and exchanges, these standards are completely voluntary.

Before the arrival of ERC 721, most (if not all) tokens on blockchains functioned either as a sort of equity, stock, currency, or a store of value... Right, like gold. With the inception of ERC 721, it has become easier to create unique tokens that are digital collectibles like cats that can be used to represent something like real living cats or digital art.

### ERC 1155

ERC 1155 is the new official Ethereum token standard for coining both fungible and non-fungible assets. The standard allows Ethereum’s development community to build applications that integrate ERC 1155 assets with utter confidence that the standard is future proof. 

ERC 1155 is the only non-fungible token standard that enables its users to create every type of asset, from real estate and currency to gaming items and digital art. With all that in mind, I think it’s safe to state that ERC 1155 is here to stay.

### Non-Ethereum NFT Standards

Of course, no one is denying the fact that the Ethereum network is currently the most developed and convenient platform when it comes to the creation of non-fungible tokens. That said, this doesn’t mean that other chains can’t come in handy.

Let’s take a look at [DGoods](https://dgoods.org/), for instance. This open-source and free standard has been working on the implementation of a feature-rich cross-chain. For the newbies, a cross-chain simply refers to the interoperability between two relatively independent blockchains. In other words, the feature permits different blockchains to communicate with one another since they’re built in a standardized way.

Another standard worth looking at is COSMOS, whose development team is dedicating its efforts to creating an independent NFT module, which will be a major part of COSMOS SDK. 

Last but not least is FLOW. Even though it's one of the newest blockchains, Flow is open to NFT projects and has even partnered with UFC, NBA, and other huge names to create joint exclusive NFTs for fans of the brands. 

## Key features of NFTs

### Standardization 
The strict standardization of NFT token data implies that if, for instance, you integrate an ERC721 token from one project into your app or game, no additional effort will be required on your part to integrate tokens from other ERC721 projects as well. This, in turn, enables projects to create high-volume NFTs that can offer perks across a wide array of platforms. 

### Interoperability 
Due to the standardization of NFTs as noted above, a higher degree of interoperability is allowed in the realm of NFTs, which means you can transfer unique digital assets between applications with relative ease. This, in turn, ushers in additional NFT use cases. 

### Tradability 
The ability to be traded freely on open marketplaces is arguably the most compelling feature of NFTs. For the first time in history, you and I can move items outside of our original environments and into marketplaces where we can take advantage of refined trading capabilities, such as eBay-style bundling, bidding, auctions, and the ability to sell products in any currency, including application-specific currencies and stable coins. 

### Liquidity 
NFTs offer investors additional liquidity over their assets when they need it. Here is a great example. Let’s say a virtual landowner opts to rent out his/her virtual property to influencers or advertisers for a specific fee, while still retaining proprietorship over the land. In this case, the virtual land still belongs to the original owner, even though a portion of it has been liquefied as rent. 

### Immutability 
NFTs not only create value for tokenized digital assets but also ensure immutability. NFTs create mediums where physical objects such as artworks can be tokenized, which in turn, limits ownership to the artist by eliminating the possibility of duplication of such artwork. This is what eventually creates scarcity for the art and hence, value for it. 

### Programmability 
Like every conventional digital token and asset built on smart contract Blockchains, NFTs are fully programmable. Axie Infinity and [CryptoKitties](https://www.cryptokitties.co/) boast breeding mechanics coded directly into their tokens, which in turn, ensures even more functionality.

## How do non-fungible tokens work?

Perhaps the best way to explain how non-fungible tokens work and the problems that they solve is to review a few examples. 

### Identity of Things
Thanks to NFTs, machines, devices, and objects can have their own digital identities. Identity of things (IDoT) is a significant step toward blockchain-based smart cities, IoT applications, and supply chains. 

Let’s take a future city with autonomous cars, for example. These vehicles need to have the ability to make decisions and navigate around the city on their own, particularly when there are no commuters inside the car to dictate the journey. IDoT can enable a systematic and database optimization of parking, traffic, passengers, and cars. 

### Digital Identity
Similar to machines, devices, and objects, digital identity presents another area that could benefit from NFTs. While you will not be able to trade your identity tokens, you will be able to share the unspent transaction output (UTXO) of their reassurance with anybody who needs to verify your identity. Here is an example:

Let’s say you receive your birth certificate, national ID, high school/university diploma, and driver’s license in form of digital tokens. While these tokens will exist digitally on a universal blockchain, they will belong only to you. This further implies that your entire identity could exist on a blockchain and you could choose and pick what to share with who and when. 

### Certification
Another valuable (and arguably the biggest potential) application of non-fungible tokens is certification. We can use digital tokens to prove the origins of a piece of data, document, or even physical objects in the real world. 

Even better, since blockchain tokens cannot be double-spent or duplicated, we can rest assured that a token won't ever be counterfeited.

Taking into account the multiple NFT applications mentioned above, it's only natural to think of these as a great match to regulate identity and ownership rights on virtual worlds.

If you acquire an ERC 721 or ERC 1155 token, it’ll go straight to your Ethereum wallet address (just as it would have if you had acquired an ERC 20 token.) That said, when you view the token in your wallet, the network will not tell you anything about the token’s value – only that you’re the current owner.

The value of the token you acquired will be determined by whatever system the non-fungible token is a part of. For instance, CryptoKitty NFTs are linked to drawings of kitties with certain attributes, and if you own one of these and would like to know its value, you’ll have to post it on one of the open markets mentioned above and choose to sell.

 

## The Bottom Line
Just like with most novice technologies, the application or overall adoption of NFTS isn’t clear at the moment. That said, the fact that these tokens have been causing some stir in the crypto realm is undeniable – and when you couple that with the unique opportunity to digitize assets that NFTs offer, you’ll notice that possible use cases of NFTs’ are quite unlimited.

Delivering on its promise to develop a full-fledged metaverse with unparalleled entertainment offerings, Sensorium is unveiling PRISM, a virtual world dedicated to music, as the first destination to become available to users. Inside this environment, visitors can take part in the galactic Sensorium Party 24/7, where Sensorium's pioneering AI avatars can be seen performing.

The new stage enables users to become familiar with the metaverse's VR mechanics, the immersive environments that underpin it, and avatar customization options.

Within these spaces, users will also have, for the first time, the opportunity of interacting with others in VR and via voice chat, meeting not only other human participants but also virtual beings.

Sensorium Galaxy Enters Public Playtest and Lays Out Global Metaverse Vision

The cryptocurrency market is a very active community that initiates thousands of transactions to be verified daily, but verifying transactions can be pretty slow.

Crypto liquidity pools provide a faster means of turning digital assets into cash, and this option can be helpful for people who make frequent transactions.

This article will inform you about liquidity pools, how they work, and several other things you should know about them.


## What is a liquidity pool?

A liquidity pool is a smart contract containing large portions of cryptocurrency, digital assets, tokens, or virtual coins locked up and ready to provide essential liquidity for networks that facilitate decentralized trading.

A [decentralized exchange](https://sensoriumxr.com/articles/what-are-decentralized-exchanges) relies greatly on liquidity because of the regular rate at which transactions are made on their network; for this reason, decentralized exchanges need to be connected to liquidity pools that can help maintain a steady functional network that doesn’t delay transactions made by traders.

In crypto liquidity pools, digital assets are locked and ready for exchange. Liquidity pools serve as a digital asset reserve that can provide liquidity to help speed up transactions for decentralized finance (also known as DeFi) markets such as decentralized exchanges (also known as DEX).

Unlike traditional finance, which pairs buyers and sellers to complete a transaction, liquidity pools do not need to connect users to complete a trade. Instead, they function automatically through automated market makers (amms) that connect you to the smart contract with your requested digital assets locked up in them.

Automated market makers are algorithmic protocols that determine digital asset prices and automate asset trades on liquidity pools.

A liquidity pool gathers its assets through users called liquidity providers (also known as LPs), who contribute to a percentage of the crypto asset in a typical liquidity pool smart contract.

## How do liquidity pools work?

Liquidity pools use automated market makers (AMMs) that connect users aiming to trade pairs with the appropriate smart contracts for them. AMMs are the protocols used to determine the price of digital assets, and it does a great job of providing the most reasonably accurate market price on liquidity pools.

Before liquidity pools can achieve their principal function of providing enough liquidity for crypto markets worldwide, they will require the tokens of liquidity providers.

To become a liquidity provider, you can adapt the steps below to any liquidity pool platform of your choosing:

1. Credit your crypto wallet with the crypto tokens you aim to lock up in a liquidity pool and connect it to the liquidity pool platform of your choosing or sign up on a liquidity pool platform and credit the liquidity pool wallet of your account on that platform’s wallet.
2. Find the trading pairs you’d like to invest in and deposit an equally divided portion of your crypto investment into that trading pair; for example, to invest $1000 into an ETH and USDT trading pair, you would need to deposit $500 each in both ETH and USDT on that liquidity pool.

Once you’ve made your deposit, select the period you want to have it locked up in the pool.

After the period of lockup has elapsed, you, as a liquidity provider, will be rewarded with liquidity pool tokens according to your selected trading pair and liquidity pool platform.

However, during the lockup period, you will also acquire an earning portion of the transaction fees paid to make exchanges with the pool you committed your crypto. 

Some crypto liquidity pools also provide the option of staking liquidity pool tokens in exchange for earning the platform's native token.


## Why are liquidity pools important?

Liquidity pools play a significant role in providing liquidity in illiquid markets and boosting the DeFi ecosystem. The low liquidity that peer-to-peer exchanges offer can slow down the speed of transactions in financial markets. Still, with the help of liquidity pools where tokens are locked up in smart contracts, people can make transactions quickly.

The price of assets on crypto liquidity pools is also very fair. They can only be influenced by the current market exchange rate, which offers relatively accurate prices for the assets they supply to liquidity pool intelligent contracts. Unlike traditional exchanges, where buyers and sellers can influence the bidding price of their transactions with other traders, liquidity pools provide a more consistent environment where prices can be more accurate.

### Faster transactions

With sufficient liquidity being provided through liquidity pools, you can make faster transactions and turn your tokens into cash within a shorter period.

Liquidity pools provide a faster means of making transactions than P2P exchanges, which require traders to release assets, verify trades and spend some time making transfers needed to complete the exchanges.

Liquidity pools already have reserves of the crypto pair you wish to exchange, allowing for faster, trustworthy exchange.

### Secured exchange with reduced possibility of scam

The process through which users of liquidity pools acquire their crypto pairs is secure compared to that of a P2P transaction.

P2P transactions require two users to trust each other to complete their end of the contract. Still, with liquidity pools, automated market makers (amms) automatically connect users with contracts containing their trading pairs.

Amms also releases the crypto already locked up in smart contracts. With such a system, people making transactions on a crypto network can quickly receive their assets without the possibility of the other trader refusing to release them.

### Fair price on exchanges

Prices offered for exchanges on liquidity pools are not influenced by bias or greed, which P2P exchanges can be affected by because traders determine the trading price of their exchanges.

Amms provides the market price for making exchanges on liquidity pools, and the prices amms provide are based on authentic information that users can trust.

The smart contract code of a liquidity pool may be accessible to developers. Developers with such access can breach the smart contract by obtaining all your assets locked in the liquidity pool without your permission.

For this reason, users of liquidity pools are advised to do extensive research on the integrity of the liquidity pools they connect to their wallets and read the terms and conditions of the smart contract they join.

### Risky price change

Since Automated Market Makers (AMMs) determine prices on liquidity pools, assets locked up in their smart contracts are subject to constant change.

Amms constantly update the prices of trading pairs on the list of trading assets they offer on pools.

### Impermanent Loss

The change in prices offered by liquidity pools can lead to a significant loss or gain of assets stored in the pool.

The crypto market is volatile, and a tremendous price change can lead to losing assets locked up in a pool.

Volatile changes can easily affect small asset portions, and lost assets may be unrecoverable for investors who only lock up a small asset portion to a liquidity pool.

## Liquidity pools vs. order books

Liquidity pools complete trades through a process different from order books.

On liquidity pools, traders receive their assets directly from a smart contract with trading pairs ready for exchange.

Order books, however, require the intervention of the platform and traders involved in the exchange before traders can release assets to the appropriate people.

Liquidity pools use Automated Market Makers (AMMs)  to price the assets locked up for an exchange, but unlike liquidity pools, order books are used by centralized exchanges to price the crypto assets traded on their platforms.

## How much do liquidity providers earn?

Liquidity pools may operate differently depending on the platform, which accommodates the process, but one way those who provide liquidity on crypto liquidity pools can earn some return on their contribution is through yield farming.

Yield farming (also known as liquidity mining) is the protocol that allows a liquidity provider to lock their crypto assets in a protocol to generate rewards in the form of tokens.

The rewarding earnings gathered from liquidity mining can either be high or low depending on the amount of risk involved in the protocol.

A liquidity provider gets rewarded with a profit percentage in exchange for supplying digital assets to any liquidity pools connected to their wallet.

The amount of profit a liquidity provider makes from a yield farm depends on how long they retain their crypto assets within the crypto liquidity pool of that yield farm.

Profits made by a liquidity provider may also be in the form of liquidity pool tokens (or LP tokens) equivalent to the number of crypto tokens they contribute to the decentralized pool or fractional trading fees divided amongst the liquidity providers whenever a trade is facilitated on the liquidity pool.

## Are liquidity pools safe?

Liquidity pools provide a lot more safety than order books. Order books are safe for traders who don’t release their assets until they verify the other trader's commitment. Still, liquidity pools cut through the waiting time and release users' assets faster since the assets are already locked in smart contracts.

Although a liquidity pool ensures the safety of your transactions, the safety of your tokens within the liquidity pool depends on the amount of research you do before participating in them.

NFTs are getting a lot of hype today, adding to the crypto craze taking over the online world.

In recent years, the market for non-fungible tokens has been the fastest in the crypto and blockchain universe, with celebrities, brands and millions of buyers jumping on board. The technology has also attracted plenty of attention for the innovation and potential opportunities it holds.

And while most of us will have heard of non-fungible tokens, many people still don’t know quite exactly what they are or understand how they’re being used.

Today, we are taking a closer look at not only NFTs but also a new generation of non-fungible tokens that promise to take this technology to new heights - Smart NFTs.


## What Are NFTs

NFTs are a type of digital certificate that establish the ownership, authenticity and uniqueness of physical and digital assets.
Non-fungible tokens are based on blockchain technology, similarly to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Dogecoin.

NFTs can be linked to an underlying asset like an image or a song through smart contracts which lay out the details associated with a particular non-fungible token. The smart contract will also include the intellectual property rights associated with that NFT.

And while NFTs are now highly prized as a way of safeguarding ownership and IP rights, many companies are also finding innovative ways of leveraging the technology to modernize their products, raise funds, create a more exclusive connection to users, and more.

NFTs have the potential to revolutionize many industries. Currently, we’re already seeing some applications of non-fungible tokens as:

Once they are created, NFTs are permanently recorded on a blockchain's public ledger that is available for all users to consult. ## What Are Smart NFTs

Smart NFTs build upon the concept of traditional non-fungible tokens while adding new layers of functionality and programmability.
A simple way to go about it is to think of an NFT and a smart NFT like a regular normal phone compared to a smartphone.

Smart NFTs can have a number of properties, including being upgradable and time-limited, that can not only enable more digital efficiency but open new creative opportunities for brands, creators, users and crypto enthusiasts.

[Wakatta](https://wkt.io/) is one of the few blockchains currently offering this type of additional NFT functionalities. A key feature of smart NFTs is tied to programmability. Simply put, a smart NFT is programmable to change and adapt over time. They can respond to external inputs, actions or triggers.

An early example of this can be seen in a three-dimensional video sculpture called [Human One](https://human-one.xyz/) by acclaimed visual artist Beeple. The NFT was sold last year for $29 million, and unlike other digital artworks, this particular NFT is meant to change over time, with the artist confirming “the piece is not complete”. Beeple later went on to add that he will continue “changing and updating the piece for the rest of my life.”

While paintings, sculptures and other forms of real world art don’t change after being purchased, digital art NFTs provide an opportunity to buy something that can evolve.

## Types of Smart NFTs

While we’re still scratching the surface of this technology, several types of smart NFTs are already emerging and being put to use across industries.

### Upgradable NFTs

This type of smart NFT type enables users to edit already existing NFTs. In practice, they consist of multi-layers tokens where several tokens can be inside the original NFT. You can think of it as a matryoshka of sorts. Another way of imagining an upgradable NFT is to think of having a picture of the Mona Lisa and adding a mustache to it, for example. Or sampling a song from another artist to create a new track - without having to worry about any legal headaches.

Lastly, another promising application of these tokens is the metaverse, where in-platform assets could be tied to specific timeframes.

### Non-hashed NFTs

Non-hashed NFTs allow users to save text details right on the smart contract without the need to write a single line of code. The idea has become associated with next-generation environments, like the metaverse, that rely on convenience and absence of the bureaucracy to function. 

Non-hashed NFTs can significantly facilitate administrative procedures related to metaverse participants, from users and content creators to developers, companies and investors. That isn’t to say that there aren’t real world applications. On the contrary, non-hashed NFTs can be used as data containers, where companies or even governments could securely use it to store information about citizens, cars, medical records, and a lot more. 

In the end, non-hashed NFTs are a great way of facilitating smart contracts and promoting efficiency in blockchain-based environments.
